What are Registries?

Registries are organized data of a population that include health data. An example of this would be the National Center for Health Statistics / NCHS which obtains information on births/deaths and marriages/divorces. In terms of Public Health, registries are useful because it can observe and analyze treads that may be of concern for the population. An example would be a finding of an increase in occurrence of lung cancer in women. Some uses of registries include:
  • incidence/trends of disease
  • identifying risk factors for specific disease
  • research
Registries can be sponsored by entities. This includes the federal government, state governments, universities, hospitals, non-profit organizations and private groups. These Registries can track all sorts of specific data like cancer or immunizations.
